I should have written this post two months ago when I wrote about “How to choose a good domain name for you site”, anyway later is better than never. When any one thinks of a domain name ‘.com’ comes in their mind automatically without a second though. But if you look around on the net you will see that not all the domain names have got .com as an extension. There are diffrent type of extensions out there like .net, .org and more.
I will try to explain couple of important domain extensions and their purpose.
.com represents the word Commercial. It is the most popular domain extension in the world. It was originally designed to be the domain extension for Commercial websites. Today .com is the top-choice domain extension on the internet for both business and personal sites.
.net represents the word Network. It was initially intended for network oriented sites such as internet service providers. But these days people use .net for commercial use specially it’s a great option when your preferred .com has already been registered.
.org represents the word Organization. It was initially assigned to non-commercial groups or trade associations. It’s a very popular choice for non profit organizations. Again this is no longer the case, any individual or company can register .org to protect their main domain by registering all domain extension or simply if better domain extensions are not available.
.mobi is short for Mobile. It was designed to ensure a standardized format for accessing websites and applications through mobile devices like PDAs, cell phones.
You can obviously guess now .info represents the word Information. It is generally used as an extension for informational websites. If you are planning to create an informational website, this is definitely the right domain extension that I would recommend.
It represents Business of course. .biz was created to serve business websites exclusively. It’s not a very commonly recognized extension; however it is open for registration without any particular legal restrictions.
If you are focusing on a specific country there are country code extensions like .us, .co.uk, .eu, .ca, .asia etc that you can use. For an example if you have a Italy only website or doing business in Italy you can use .it but the only problem will arise in future if you like to globalize your business the country-code extensions are not very likely to have a global appeal and therefore in the long run you will limit yourself to that specific region.
