How to Sell Non Digital Products on WordPress Site using WP eStore

Basic Product Configuration

First we will need to create a product with product information to display it on our site. Under WP eStore main menu select “Add/Edit Products” from your WordPress Dashboard.

Now we will enter a Name and Price for our T-Shirt.

You can add a pic of the T-Shirt that to the product. Simply select “Additional Product Details” from “Add/Edit Products” and enter the Location of the image or URL of the image in “Thumbnail Image URL”. You can also add additional Information of the item in “Product Description”.

If you have limited stock, you can use the feature “Inventory Control”, where you can add the quantity of the Item. The Plugin keeps track of the sales automatically and once the item is sold out it stops selling that particular product.

Shipping Details will be provided to you by Paypal from the customers’ profile detail but you can give your customers an option to input their shipping details manually on the checkout page. To set this up just tick the box for “Collect Customer Input” under “Additional Product Details”.

This is a just basic setup for selling a Tangible or Non Digital Product. You can simply use a shortcode from WP eStore shortcode library to display the products on your site to sell.

Example below shows how your Product will look after the basic setup. As I am not really selling T-shirts so I have disabled my “Add to Cart Option”. But you can still get the idea.

Product Variation for Non Digital Product

T-Shirts come in various sizes (small, medium, large etc) and colours (red, green, blue etc). To add these information to our product we will be using the Variation Feature which is right under “Add/Edit Products” menu for each individual product. WP eStore Plugin allows up to 3 Variations for each product.

We will be using Product Variation1 for T-Shirt sizes and Product Variation2 for colours.

Product Variation1: Size|Small|Medium|Large

Product Variation2: Colour|Blue|Green|Black

You cam also charge your customers extra for the variations. For example you can charge extra $2 for Blue, $5 for Green and 7.50 for the Black T-Shirts. The extra amount will be added to the base price.

Simple Shipping Option

Unfortunately we cannot deliver a T-Shirt by email so we will need to setup shipping option to deliver it. WP eStore Shopping Cart Plugin offers simple shipping options.

If you just want to use flat shipping cost for each item then just enter “0” in the “Base Shipping Cost” option in the “Settings” menu and add the individual shipping cost in the “Item Shipping Cost” field when you configure the product.

If you want to use a fixed shipping cost for the cart no matter how many items are in the cart then you can do this by specifying this fixed amount in the base shipping cost. The base shipping cost is only added to the cart if a product in the cart has individual shipping value specified (this way if a customer buys digital product he doesn’t get charged any shipping). Use an individual shipping value of “0.001? for your physical items which won’t increase the shipping cost but will trigger the base shipping cost to be added as a fixed shipping rate.

Shipping Variation

You can use the shipping variation option field to add more shipping options for your need. For example, you can add a variation called Shipping with the values “Country_name1”, “Country_name2” and “Country_name3” that adds different amount to the cart based on the user selection.

Tax Calculation

You can calculate sales Tax for your products in two ways.

• Use the built-in tax feature of eStore
• Use the PayPal’s profile based tax feature

If you are using WP eStore’s Tax Calculation option then simply enable the tax calculation option from the settings menu and specify the tax rate for your products.

If you don’t want to charge sales tax or might want to charge a different tax rate based on your geographical location for a particular product then you will need to override the tax rate for the particular production from the individual product’s tax option.

2. Manage Products

Once the product is saved, it will be assigned with a unique product ID which you will need later to display the product on your site. You can find Product IDs for all your products under “Manage Products” menu under WP eStore main menu. “Manage Products” menu let you manage all your existing products. You can search for products, select a product to edit/update through this screen.

3. Product Delivery

When customers purchase your Digital product they receive an email with the encrypted download link after the payment which is the default delivery method for Digital content. But you can also choose to deliver the digital products on a post-payment return page (eg. Thank You page). This allows the customers to download the Digital goods via an encrypted link instantly rather than waiting for the email.

Emails are delivered instantly too but sometimes it can take a few minutes and also there is the possibility of an email getting lost.

Below is an example “Thank you” Page when someone makes a purchase and returns to this page after payment.

5. Shortcodes

We will now create a sample Test Product Page to demonstrate how to sell the Digital product we have just Created on the system.

To display/sell a product on your WordPress site you will need to use the following short codes.

The first code creates an Add to Cart button for the product ID – 33 (the one we just configured) and the second code display the items in the shopping cart once the Add to Cart button has been clicked.

WP Plugin has Shortcode library that you can use to display products, buttons, and shopping cart in various ways.

Once the Sample Test Page is published the product page will look like below with the shopping cart.

7. Adding “Thank you” page

Now we need to add “Thank you” page to the Cart Settings.  Select “Settings” from WP eStore Menu.

In the “Return URL” under “General Shopping Cart Settings” enter the URL of the “Thank you” page you have created.

Click “Update Options” to save the settings.

We are all done here now.

Once the customer Add the product to the Cart the page will look like below. Your customers can checkout through PayPal, 2Checkout, Authorize.net or manual Payment.

After the payment the customer will redirect to the “Thank you” page that have the download link for your Digital content.

How secure do you think your WordPress Login is? As a WordPress bogger, you know that your login page is pretty much available to the rest of the World and all you need is a Username and Password. Over 90% WordPress users have their Username as “Admin” which makes the hackers’ job lot easier and besides the hackers someone random might just try to crack your password for fun.

There are couple of ways you can keep your WordPress login secure.

Limit the Login Attempts:

You can limit the number of times a user can re-try different password for your site. There is a plugin that you can use. It calls Login Lock Down.

Login Lock Down can record IP address and timestamp of every failed WordPress login attempt. If more than a certain number of attempts are detected within a short period of time from the same IP range, the plugin disables login function for all the requests from that IP range. This helps to prevent brute force password discovery. Currently the plugin defaults to a 1 hour lock out of an IP block after 3 failed login attempts within 5 minutes. You can modify this via Plugin Option panel. Administrators can release locked out IP ranges manually from the panel.

Remove the Login Error Message:

Another way to improve the protection of your WordPress login is by preventing WordPress from displaying the default error message on the login page. If you look at the login error message for an invalid attempt, it gives away a lot of login information. Thus, if an attacker were to guess your username, the login error would provide confirmation and enable the attacker to focus on your password.

Look at the Screenshot below. If the attacker guesses your correct Username the error massage actually confirms that the password is incorrect for that Username.

When an attacker enters an invalid username WordPress shows error message Invalid username which tells the attacker that the user name is invalid.

Fortunately there is a solution to this. You can prevent the login error message by adding the following line to your functions.php file:

add_filter(‘login_errors’,create_function(‘$a’, “return null;”));
