The most common issue an eBook writer faces is the illegal file sharing of their eBooks. Because of this widespread problem eBook writers are losing millions of dollars each year. Forget about the industry just imagine how would you feel after publishing an eBook putting so much effort into writing the book and find your eBook on free file sharing sites on the internet?
I bet you have asked this question million times “how can I really protect my eBooks?’
There are not many options out there for the eBook publishers to protect their work especially when you are selling the eBooks from Internet. You can hold the copyright but the problem is to enforce that copyright. You might have protected your eBook downloads with a special script or a passwords protected member site but ones your eBook gets downloaded anyone can do whatever they want with your eBooks.
It happened with me once before. Last year I launched an eBook and within a month the book was already up on a file sharing site. Since then I wasn’t really sure if I want to launch another eBook.
Luckily I found this WordPress Plugin called WP PDF Stamper. When you sell your eBook to a customer this plugin stamp the PDF file with the customers’ detail (e.g. name, email, address etc) at the bottom of each page upon purchase.
The main reason to stamp your PDF eBooks is to protect the eBooks from being shared. As I mentioned before WP PDF Stamper allows you to dynamically stamp a PDF file with customer’s details in the footer. WP PDF Stamper can be integrated with your check out (shopping carts) system and collects the customers verified personal information from the payment gateway. This way customers’ true personal detail can be collected and stamped on the eBook.
When an eBook is stamped with customer’s personal information such as name, address, email address it automatically discourage the person to share the eBook on the internet. Would you share a file on the internet that has got your personal information? I won’t.
Stamping the eBook also allows you to track down the source of the shared file. When you come across a shared eBook, you will be able to track down the person who shared it as the buyers personal information is stamped on the eBook.
It all comes down to protecting your assets. You would not want to waste all your hard work and invested time because someone decided to share your eBook on a file sharing site. You have to look after yourself.
