How to create Categories in WordPress and find Category ID

When you install  for the first time, it comes with a default category called Uncategorized.

I will show you how you can create new categories and categories within categories (subcategory) by following steps:

  • In your administration panel click the “Categories” link under the “Post” menu and it will open the Categories page.
  • Under the “Add New Category” heading type the name of your category in the text box labeled as “Name”.
  • If it is the main category leave the “Parent” drop down menu to “None”. You can create subcategories using the “Parent” drop down box. For an example, if you already have a category created called “WordPress” now you want to have a sub category called “Themes” simply type “Themes” in the “Name” text box and choose  “WordPress” in the “Parent” drop box.
  • Description”   box is optional. If you want to put a description about the category you can use the box.
  • Click the “Add New Category” and your category will be created.

There is another way to create a Category when you publish a New Post. You can either create a Category and add it to the post or simply create it in your post.

  •  When you add New Post or edit an existing post, to your right hand side there is a Category box. Click the “+Add New Category” link and a text box will appear right under it.
  • In the text box type the Category name. Leave the drop down box as “-Parent Category-“.
  • If you are adding a category under an existing category use the drop down box to find the parent category.
  • Click “Add New Category” box and the category will be created.
